BBC One is known for its staple crime dramas of a Sunday eve and last night didn’t disappoint. Now when you think of Agatha Christie your mind is automatically taken to Marple, Poirot…and that one Doctor Who episode that affirms everyone’s irrational fear of wasps.
But last night two of Christie’s lesser known sleuths were brought to the screen in ‘Partners in Crime’.
Tommy and Tuppence Beresford are just your everyday husband and wife. With dog Tiffin and son George (don’t get me started on the break in alliteration) their normal lives are suddenly interrupted when they find themselves thrust onboard a mystery.
David Walliams features as Tommy, with Call the Midwife star Jessica Raine bringing that little piece of class to wife Tuppence. An unlikely duo, with Walliams more notably known for his comedic roles, the Beresford’s are a charming pair. Bumbling Tommy adds a humorous reprieve to the serious scenes that Raine finds herself in as the slightly nosey, but headstrong Tuppence.
The overall pace of the first episode I thought worked well as an introduction to the series. It was definitely and hopefully the drama and excitement will build now that we’ve gotten to know the characters a little bit. The ‘Next Time’ that was previewed at the end certainly suggests so.
All in all I’ve been excited for this new series for the past few weeks. Jessica Raine is hands down one of my favourite British drama actresses, and David Walliams is…well…David Walliams! I’m looking forward to seeing what mischief Tommy and Tuppence will be getting themselves in over the next 5 weeks.
Side note: Did you know that Jaffa Cakes were introduced was back in 1927? Just one of the many things we learnt during last nights episode.
